Startrite Vertical Bandsaw models Explained:
Wood Working Bandsaws
Startrite woodworking bandsaws were often built with light weight frames, and 12″ or 14″ bandwheels for a compact design. These saws are great for hobbyist users and light work.
Startrite 301
The Startrite 301 is the smallest of the Startrite vertical bandsaws. Named 301 due to its 12″ bandwheels (300mm) and its single speed.
Due to its compact frame size and single high speed, this machine is the perfect hobbyist bandsaw.
Startrite 351 / 352
Startrite 351 & Startrite 352 are the mid-range wood working vertical bandsaws. Names 351 / 352 due to their 350mm bandwheel size (14″) and either 1 or 2 speeds respectively.
The 351 / 352 has been a favourite of woodworkers across the UK for years, due to the well made reliability. The 14″ bandwheel gives these saws a deeper throat size than the entry level 301, and a second speed on the 352 allows a choice of high speed rip cuts, or a slower, cleaner cut.
Startrite 351S / 352S
The later edition of the Startrite 351 / 352. Some slight improvements and metrication compared to the original.
Startrite 12-S / Bandit
The Bandit was a small bandsaw that would typically be desk mounted. These machines have a 12″ throat size, and could come in either single, five or 10 speeds. The Bandit is more rugged than the smaller framed 301 / 352 saws. Single speed & 5 speed saws were suited to wood working, and were generally more suited to production work than the 301 / 352 bandsaws.
Some machines also had the 5 speed pulley, with a high and low gearbox that gave total of 10 speeds (12-S-10). These machines were also suitable for light metal work. A good all-rounder.
Medium Vertical Saws
Solid, well built bandsaws, capable of handling production work.
Startrite V, T, R, S – Models of Bandsaw (14, 18, 20, 24 & 30)
These bandsaws were the flagship models for Startrite. Featuring either 5 or 10 speeds, or sometimes fitted with a variable speed gearbox.
This range covered a large list of models, and could be stylized as follows:
18-S-10 (18″ Throat, Sabre, 10 speed)
20V (20″ Throat, Volant)
14RWF (14″ Throat, Rapier – Welder – Fixed Table)
24RWS (24″ Throat, Rapier – Welder – Sliding Table)
30RWH (30″ Throat, Rapier – Welder – Hydraulic Table)
There are a huge amount of variation across these machines, in their applications and features. Typically, these machines can handle most jobs, in either wood or metal cutting, and are often found in factories to this day due to their rugged reliability in production sawing and versatility.
Some of these bandsaws were fitted with the variable speed drive, which allows the speed to be changed by winding a handle while the machine is running.
There are also three types of table fitted to these saws, the fixed table, Manual sliding table and Hydraulic Sliding Table.

Startrite 502 / 502S
The Startrite 502 & 502S were the largest of the wood working bandsaws made by Startrite, intended for production use. Also suitable for plastics and other light materials.
This machine has 20″ bandwheels (500mm) giving it a very deep 500mm throat.
The 502 has 2 speeds – a high and low. Both speeds are relatively high, and suitable for either fast rough wood cuts, or a finer finish cut. Not suitable for metal work, as the saw speed does not run slow enough.
The 502S was the later edition of the 502, with some slight improvements and metrication found on this bandsaw.
Industrial Saws
These bandsaws are popular in a host of industries, including aerospace, manufacturing, maritime, education and more. Often fitted with hydraulic sliding tables, variable speed drives and wired for 3 phase, these saws were built for control, precision and heavy production work in mind.
Startrite 216 / 316
The 216 / 316 model number, simply means that these machines feature 16″ bandwheel, the 216 has two, and the 316 has three. Essentially the 216 is a more compact version of the 316.
Startrite 216 / 316 saws were fitted with the infinitely variable speed drive, which allows users to adjust the speed of the saw as the machine is running, and gives a huge amount of potential speed variation, also ensuring you can hit the right speed for the jo without compromise
Despite being one of the first industrial saws produced in the UK by Startrite, many of these saws are still found in production service today, a testament to their build quality.
Startrite V500
The V500 was a later industrial vertical offering from Startrite. Featuring 20″ bandwheels, and a 500mm throat, this machine can be found with both fixed and hydraulic tables. Some slight improvements to the variable speed drive system have been made on this saw compared to the 216 / 316.
Startrite V900
The successor to the 316, the Startrite V900 was another great heavy production bandsaw. With some improvements to the variable speed drive, and a huge 920mm throat, this machine also comes in both fixed and hydraulic sliding table models.
